After another fantastic weekend of golf at the club, it would be easy to take these things for granted. However I wanted to hightlight some of the hard work our staff, council and volunteers put in to make it happen.
Preparation for the event started almost a month prior to the event and steadily built up to the day itself. On the 1st day of the event, our Tournaments convenor, John Davidson was in the club before 7am. Not only was here there, Isobel Davidson was there too! From there they managed the tee throughout the day with support from Hilary Wallace and John Burnett, council members. In measuring John Davidson's steps on the day - he walked 5.4km back and forth to the tee before they finished at 6:30pm.
The mobile bar team of Lorna Wright and I teamed up to ensure there was a bar at the half way house. Both of us starting at a similar time to John and Isobel set to work taking the bar and marquee up to the 9th. From there we built the marquee, channeling Lorna's girl guide hitch knot experience to ensure it would be in situ for the day. From loading the car, to switching the BBQ on took 2 hours, which was done a total of 4 times over the weekend to avoid anyone trying to claim squatters rights overnight!
On the course Jim and the team worked from the break of dawn to set the course up for the weekend. Greens cut, rolled and "ironed". If you ever wondered the impact of greens being ironed - try being above the hole at 5 or 10! Jim and the team joined Lorna and I to bring the BBQ up in time for the first group making their way to the 9th green. That wasnt the end of their day, with Jeff and Alan coming back later on the Saturday to help break down the BBQ again. Jim and Calum would do likewise on the Sunday.
Throughout the day, our loyal bar staff were excellent as ever and worked hard to keep us refreshed and at times counciled when the golf wasnt quite up to our pre-game expectations. My thanks to Lorna, Brenda, Gillian and Jason for their efforts.
Our new Catering team, led by Craig Terry served meals in the club and also the BBQ at the 9th. The food received excellent feedback from members over the 2 days and I know a lot of you introduced yourselves and got to know Craig a little more.
Volunteers didnt stop there - over the 2 days, Mathew Corbett and Ian Sneddon supported our on course bar with stock and ice refreshments. Without this help, drink would have tasted decidedly warmer!
Sunday would be the same again with the off course team on site at 7am and the green staff already half way through a shift at that point. Council members, Robin Spinks, Billy Gorman, Malcolm Thomson, Joe Chucla and Craig Allan ran the tee with Military like precision for the full day.
Events like this weekend truly are a highlight of life at Newbattle Golf Club. The atmosphere over the 2 days was fabulous with a real "buzz" around the club. It is a wonderful feeling and something unique to being a member of a club such as our own. It would however be remiss not to thank our team of staff and volunteers.
